How to Order a Custom Chandelier: A U.S. Buyer’s Checklist

Custom chandelier planning checklist with three stages: measure the room, define the specification, and review the drawing and quote.

By Light in the Space · Lighting planning guide

A useful custom chandelier enquiry starts with the room dimensions, ceiling height, table size, a reference design, preferred finish and delivery ZIP code. Add your quantity, budget range and target installation date. These details help a design team assess the request and prepare a meaningful specification instead of guessing from a photograph.

Light in the Space is a U.S. lighting design company registered in Utah and operated by LIGHTINTHESPACE LLC. We develop lighting specifications and coordinate production with carefully selected manufacturing partners. Our custom lighting service covers requests such as altered dimensions, finishes and suspension lengths, subject to the proposed design.

Is customization the right starting point?

Compare standard options first. Custom work is worth discussing when a preferred fixture is too wide for a table, a ceiling requires an unusual drop, several rooms need coordinated finishes, or a project needs a particular mounting arrangement. If an existing size and finish already fit the room, customization may add decisions without improving the result.

Separate a simple configuration change from a new design. Extending an available suspension and developing a new multi-tier structure are different scopes. Ask what can remain standard and which elements require a revised drawing, new components or additional review.

Build a brief the design team can use

Information to include in a custom lighting enquiry
Send this Why it helps
Room and furniture dimensions Establishes the relationship between the fixture, furniture and surrounding space.
Ceiling height and slope Identifies the required drop and mounting questions.
Reference image or product link Shows the silhouette, materials or detail you want to discuss.
Requested width, length and overall drop Turns “larger” or “lower” into measurable dimensions.
Finish and material preferences Helps identify samples, alternatives and matching limitations.
Light source and control requirements Flags bulb, integrated LED and dimmer-compatibility questions.
Quantity, ZIP code, budget and target date Defines project scope and the delivery discussion.

Include one room photo from the doorway and another showing the ceiling mounting area. A simple dimensioned sketch is often more useful than several mood-board images without measurements. If the furniture has not been purchased, label its measurements as proposed rather than final.

Approve a complete set of dimensions

A drawing should distinguish the fixture body from its overall installed drop. Check the widest points, canopy size, suspension, and the position of shades or other projecting parts. For a rectangular design, approve length and width separately.

Review the drawing against the actual room measurements. For example, “overall drop 44 inches” and “body height 18 inches” describe different things. Confirm the drawing’s measurement endpoints so that the canopy or suspension is not accidentally counted twice. Our hanging-height guide shows the calculation.

Use a finish sample to resolve important color decisions

A finish name alone leaves room for interpretation. Describe the color, texture and sheen you want: brushed rather than polished, warm rather than cool, consistent rather than visibly varied. If matching another fitting is important, send a close-up and ask whether a physical reference or sample is needed.

Ask what the approved sample represents and what natural or handmade variation to expect. Photographing two finishes together can help a conversation, but it does not replace checking a sample in the intended room lighting.

Confirm the exact electrical and installation specification

Have your installer review the intended supply, light source, dimmer requirements, fixture weight, mounting method and suitability for the location. For integrated LED designs, ask about the driver, control compatibility and future replacement access. For replaceable lamps, confirm socket type, allowed bulb dimensions and the stated maximum lamp rating.

When certification is required for the project, request documentation for the exact finished fixture and configuration. A certified component is not the same as a certified complete product; UL Solutions explains the distinction between component recognition and finished-product listing. Confirm any effect of customization before production is approved.

Read the quote as carefully as the drawing

  • Scope: which dimensions, materials, finish and hardware are included?
  • Timing: when does production time start, and is transit stated separately?
  • Approvals: which drawings or samples need sign-off, and what happens if you request a later change?
  • Delivery: what service, packaging and access arrangements are included for your address?
  • Order terms: what payment, cancellation, return and warranty conditions apply to this custom order?

Request the agreed details in writing before committing. Custom lead times, prices and any minimum quantities depend on the specification and should be confirmed in the quote. Check the current shipping policy, return policy and warranty information alongside the project-specific terms.

Common questions

Can I enquire about just one custom chandelier?

Yes. Send the single-piece request for review. A minimum quantity may apply if a proposal needs new tooling or other design-specific work; confirm that in the quote.

How much does a custom chandelier cost?

A meaningful price needs an agreed size, material, finish, light source and delivery scope. Ask for a written quote rather than assuming that a larger version will cost a fixed percentage more.

How long will production and delivery take?

Request a project-specific schedule that separates drawing or sample approval, production and transit. Do not plan an installation around an unconfirmed estimate.
